Cateran’s Common Wealth has been initiated by a group of cultural and creative practitioners, voluntary and community organisations, business people and civic leaders living and working around the Cateran Trail.

All of us care deeply about this place and want to help it continue to thrive.

Our aim, through this project, is to celebrate the valuable assets that we hold in common and ignite a fresh approach to learning how they can help rural communities sustain themselves culturally, environmentally and economically.

We want Cateran’s Common Wealth to make a difference in three ways:

  • promote greater knowledge and understanding of the importance of our ‘common wealth’ to our future social, economic and environmental sustainability
  • enable local people to develop new and/or build existing skills and competencies through a diverse range of arts, cultural and heritage practices which will strengthen their capacity to create sustainable livelihoods for themselves and their families
  • lay the foundations for the whole locality of the Cateran Trail to become a new destination for learning a wide range of arts, cultural and heritage practices

“When we make really major decisions, we should ask not only what will it do for me today, but what will it do for my children, my children’s children, and their children’s children into the future.” Elinor Ostrom
